The region's National Forests offer 20,000 miles of streams and 170,000 acres of lakes and reservoirs for fish to live in. Some anglers are drawn by the opportunity to fish for all five species of Pacific salmon and three species of trout. Others cast their lures for warm water species such as bass, sunfish, perch, and walleye.

Fish populations are supplemented with hatchery fish in some forest lakes and streams. Fish habitat management is the responsibility of public lands agencies such as the US Forest Service, National Park Service, and Bureau of Land Management.
