FIREWOOD

About ten percent of the population uses firewood as its primary source of heat. Northwest firewood comes from standing hardwood species or from slash left from timber sales. The amount of slash available varies from year to year depending on the amount of timber sale activity and the demand for chips. Some communities restrict firewoord use during times of poor air quality.

Harvesting Firewood

Tools Needed:

•

Chain saws and splitting mauls are the most common tools

•

Steel cables, snatch blocks, and winches can be used for hauling

Season:

•

Year round, depending on local restrictions

•

Cut early and stack to dry so wood will burn cleanly and reduce air pollution
