From John Day: go west on Hwy. 26 to FS Road 21. Go south on FS Road 21 to Billy Fields Forest Camp.

6 horse tie-stall with manger, water for horses is available in the adjacent Billy Fields Creek

Buckhorn Meadows Trailhead

Directions: From John Day: drive south on US Highway 395 to the junction of County Road 65. Drive southeast on County Road 65 to FS road 1520. Drive FS road 1520 northeast to the trailhead at the end of the road.

 

Elevation:

6,000'

 

Facilities:

Undeveloped camping at trailhead, 6 horse tie-stall with manger and hitch rail, stock water available at trailhead, small parking area, no potable water or toilet facilities.

 

Activites:

Access to the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness

 

Special Considerations:

Please park in a manner that will allow others to turn around in the limited space that is available.
Please DO NOT pasture your horses or drive on the meadow.
Tent camping on the meadow is allowed.
Please use certified weed free hay and take what you do not use home.

East Davis Creek Trailhead

Directions: From John Day: drive east on US Highway 26 for approximately 15 miles toward Austin Junction. Turn west on FS road 2614. Drive west on FS road 2614 for 1 1/2 miles to FS road to FS road 2614-229 and follow it to the trailhead.

3,980'

 

Facilities:

Flat dispersed campsite near trailhead, 6 horse tie-stall, stock water located in nearby Placer Gulch, no toilet facilities

 

Special Considerations:

Please tie horses to a picket line or your trailer rather than trees.

East Fork Canyon Creek Trailhead

Directions: From John Day: drive south on Highway 395 to County Road 65. Drive County Road approximately 4 miles to the junction with FS road 6510. Follow FS road 6510 to FS road 812. Drive east on FS road 812 to the trailhead at the end of the road.

Undeveloped camping at trailhead, 6 horse tie-stall with manger, unloading ramp, hitch rail, water for horses available 1/4 mile down the trail at East Fork Canyon Creek, no toilet facility or drinking water

Head O' Boulder Camp

Directions: From John Day: drive east on US Highway 26 for approximately 15 miles to Austin Junction. Drive north on US Highway 7 for one mile to County Road 20. Drive west on County Road 20 for approximately 14 miles to FS road 45. Drive north on FS road 45 for approximately 8 miles to FS road 4500-537. Drive east on FS road 4500-537 toward Indian Rock Lookout. This road will bisect Head O' Boulder Forest Camp. This is also a trailhead which access the Vinegar Hill Scenic Area.

 

Facilities:

Few campsites available, no horse facilities available, toilet facilities, potable water, stock water available in the nearby spring

Please do not tie horses within the camping area or to trees.
Please use certified weed free hay and take what you do not use home.

Directions: From Burns: travel 20 miles north on Highway 395. The entrance will be on the right hand side off the highway.

15 sites, 4 corrals, 6 toilets, 2 hitch rails, well with handpump

 

Activites:

There are no designated trails accessed by the horse camp, but there are several roads, meadows and forest to explore.

 

Special Considerations:

Map and compass are recommended.

McClellan Trailhead

Directions: From John Day: drive west on Highway 26 to FS road 21. Drive south on FS road 21, approximately 4.5 miles to FS road 115. Proceed east on FS road 115 approximately 1/2 mile to FS road 2160. Travel south on FS road 2160 approximately 1/4 mile to FS road 2160-041. Continue traveling south on 2160-041 to the trailhead.

 

Elevation:

5,600'

 

Facilities:

Undeveloped camping at trailhead, 6 horse tie-stall with manger, fire rings, water for horses back down the 2160-041 road in a draw bottom, no toilet facility or potable water

Oregon Mine Forest Camp

Directions: From John Day: go west on Highway 26 to Forest Road 21. Go south on Forest Road 21 to Forest Road 2170. Go west on Forest Road 2170 to Oregon Mine Forest Camp.

 

Facilities:

Buck and pole corral, stock water available in the adjacent Murderer's Creek. Picnic tables, fire rings, and camping spaces available.

 

Special Considerations:

Please DO NOT pasture horses within the riparian area.
Corral does not have hinged gates at two openings, bring rope to use as a gate.
Please use certified weed free hay and take what you do not use home.

Parish Cabin Campground

Directions: From John Day: drive south on US Highway 395 to the junction of County Road 65. Drive southeast on County Road 65 to FS road 16. Drive west on FS road 16 for 1/4 mile to Parish Cabin Campground access road. This access road will be signed. Follow the access road to the campground.

 

Facilities:

20 sites, 6 horse tie-stall located outside the campground perimeter to the south, toilet facilities, potable water, stock water located in nearby Bear Creek

 

Activities:

This campground is located just a few miles south of the Strawberry Wilderness

 

Special Considerations:

Camping is not allowed outside the campground perimeter.
Please DO NOT pasture horses on Bear Creek or in the adjacent meadow.
Horses are not allowed within the campground perimeter.
Please use certified weed free hay and take what you do not use home.

Slide Connector Trailhead/Horse Camp

Directions: From Prairie City: take County road 60 to Forest Road 6001. Go approximately 0.5 miles to the Slide Connector Horse Camp.

4,800'

 

Facilities:

3 sites (2 sites have 4 single horse stalls and 1 site has 3 single horse corrals), ROMTEC toilet, stock water is available within 100 yards at Strawberry Creek

 

Special Considerations:

This is a new facility constructed in 1999. Some items are still under construction (i.e. campground signs and hitch rails still need to be installed).

Strawberry Campground and Trailhead

Directions: From Prairie City: take County Road 60 to Forest Road 6001. Go approximately 2 miles to Strawberry Campground and Trailhead.

 

Facilities:

Day use, limited space for horse facilities. Hitch rail, potable water, ROMTEC toilets, stock water is available in the adjacent Strawberry Creek. Recommended camping facilities are 1.5 miles before trailhead at Slide Horse Camp.

Access to the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness

Sunrise Butte Trail

Directions: From Prairie City: drive east on US Highway 26 approximately 15 miles to Austin Junction. Continue north on State Hwy 7 for 1 mile to paved County Road 20. Continue north and west on County Road 20 for approximately miles to Forest Road 4550 for another 5 miles to the trailhead at the end of the road.

 

Elevation:

5,800'

Facilities:

Undeveloped camping at trailhead, 6 horse tie-stall with manger. No toilet facilities, no drinking or stock water nearby.

 

Activities:

Access to the Vinegar-Hill Scenic Area

 

Special Considerations:

Large parking area for trail turnaround. Adjacent forest was burned in 1996. Trailhead mostly used during fall big game hunting seasons. Please use certified weed free hay and take what you do not use home.

Facilities:

Undeveloped camping at trailhead, 6 horse tie-stall with manger and hitch rail, stock water available 1/4 mile further north on FS road 6500-651, no toilet facilities or potable water, large parking area.

Access to the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness

West Davis Creek Trailhead

Directions: From Prairie City: drive east on US Highway 26 approximately 15 miles to Austin Junction. Continue north on State Hwy 7 for 1 mile to paved County Road 20. Continue north and west on County Road 20 for approximately 9 miles to Forest Road 2050. Follow Forest Road 2050 south for approximately 1/10 of a mile to the trailhead.

 

Elevation:

3,800'

Facilities:

Undeveloped camping at trailhead, 6 horse tie-stall with mangerat a nearby dispersed campsite. No toilet facilities or drinking water. Stock water nearby in Butte Creek

 

Activities:

Access the Davis Creek Trail which is an all purpose trail allowing motorized use.

 

Special Considerations:

Road configuration allows for easy trailer turnaround. Pasturing horses behind buck and pole fence on Butte Creek is not allowed and is punishable under CFR 261.9(a); damaging natural feature or other property of the United States. Trailhead mostly used during fall big game hunting seasons. Please use certified weed free hay and take what you do not use home.

Wickiup Campground

Directions: From John Day: drive south on US Highway 395 to the junction of County Road 65. Drive east on County Road 65 to FS road 1516 and Wickiup Campground.

 

Facilities:

Corral space for 3 horses at the northwest end of the campground. Camping spaces located very near corrals, picnic area, toilet facilities, potable water. Stock water is located in nearby Wickiup Creek.

 

Activities:

Located just a few miles south of the Strawberry Wilderness

 

Special Considerations:

Please use certified weed free hay and take what you do not use home.

Please DO NOT pasture horses on Wickiup Creek or it riparian area.

Horses are not allowed within the campground perimeter except for loading and unloading.
