The 44,600 acre Salmon-Huckleberry consists
of steep, forested ridges and valleys located
55 miles southeast of Portland and about 15
miles southeast of Sandy.
Created by the 1984 Oregon Wilderness
Act this area is the headwaters of the
Salmon River, a major contributory to
the Sandy River. While few open peaks
such as Old Baldy and Huckleberry Mountain
offer panoramic vistas, more typical of
the Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness is dense
forest carpeting steep ridges and canyons,
offering a feeling of quiet isolation.
In some canyon bottoms, small portions
of towering old growth forests remain.
Many unusual rock formations, such as
prominent cliffs, volcanic dikes, and
pinnacles add to the scenery.
